How can a BIRTH doula help you?

Why Hire a Birth Doula

Pregnancy, birth and early childhood are precious times in a family's development. Nearly every pregnancy and birth can benefit from having a doula, regardless of if it is a first baby or your tenth. You can think of a birth doula as a resource to enable a comfortable, educated and supported birth for mothers and their partners and family too. And a postpartum doula can ease the transition with a new child, allowing mother to be nourished, supported, well rested and more easily heal and restore her strength.

While not medically supporting the birth of the baby (like a doctor or midwife does), birth doulas build a trusting relationship with soon-to-be parents and helps them prepare a birth plan and learn skills that will help them through their labor, birth and the early postpartum period. At the birth a birth doula works to support the parents' wishes by providing the emotional and physical support they need during their baby's birth. A doula is like a torchbearer at the birth, aiming to stay alongside the mother throughout her entire active labor (as best for the family and situation).

Doula support can take on many different forms including

  • finding birth-related resources to support mothers pre and postnatally

  • applying and teaching natural pain-relieving techniques using a rebozo or hands-on support

  • giving dad/other support team members a break so he/she can get a snack or catch a quick nap

  • helping the birthing mother find optimal labor and birth positions

  • helping parents navigate medical procedures and make informed choices

  • coordinating things during labor, birth and the early postpartum period

  • setting the atmosphere during a birth (music, scents, scenery)

  • taking photos of the birth

  • assisting with other children at the birth and both the baby and other children postpartum

  • supporting the full family nutritionally, with sleep and establishing breastfeeding after baby arrives

  • organizing pre and postpartum ceremonies to honor mother and baby

  • performing a bone closing ceremony with mom

  • sharing other valuable resources in the community

As you can see, the support offerings of a birth doula are diverse. This is because each family's needs and each baby's birth are unique.

As expecting parents, it's important for you a to find a birth doula with whom you feel comfortable, and who you feel can help you achieve a birth that you'll feel good about. To see if Erin Lester could be the right Birth Doula for you, schedule a free consultation.

Supporting You on Your Journey through Motherhood

“Remember this, for it is as true and true gets: Your body is not a lemon. You are not a machine. The Creator is not a careless mechanic. Human female bodies have the same potential to give birth well as aardvarks, lions, rhinoceros, elephants, moose, and water buffalo. Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far, I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body.”
